Which Dental Insurance Plan Should You Choose? Medicaid, DMO, and PPO Explained

Transcript - Medicaid, DMO, PPO Insurance Explained

Many new patients to New York City often ask about dental insurance options. There are three main types of dental insurance available.

Medicaid

The first type is Medicaid, which is a government-subsidized plan. With Medicaid, patients can only visit Medicaid dental providers, and there are limitations on restorative treatments. Cosmetic work is typically not covered under Medicaid dental insurance plans.

HMO/DMO/DHMO

The second type includes HMO, DMO, and DHMO plans, which are community-based. Under these plans, patients are assigned a specific dentist and must receive all care from that dentist. If a specialist is needed, a referral is required. These plans significantly limit the choice of providers.

PPO

The preferred option is a PPO plan. PPO dental insurance plans are employer-based and offer the freedom to see any dentist. Many PPO plans include out-of-network benefits, though some may only offer in-network benefits, so it's important to check the specifics of the plan. Ideally, a plan with out-of-network benefits is best, as it allows patients to see any dentist and typically covers a wide range of services, including cleanings, fillings, crowns, dental implants, dentures, and partials. While PPO plans usually involve some out-of-pocket expenses, they contribute up to a maximum amount, such as $2,000, towards dental health. Therefore, a PPO, employer-based dental insurance plan is generally the best choice.
